Top 5 videogames to play with your significant other

2/5/2008

So your girlfriend/boyfriend finally agreed to play videogames with you instead of watching or doing something else. Awesome! But...what games do you choose now that they have agreed to play with you? The following list is comprised of games that you two will be able to enjoy together:

______________________________________________________________

Toe Jam and Earl

Groovy

Considered by many to be a classic, Toe Jam and Earl was originally released on Genesis. The controls are extremely easy to learn, and the game doesn't contain any crazy inventory systems or impossible bosses; just good, clean fun and a supercatchy soundtrack.

If you don't have a Genesis, but do have a Wii, you are in luck; Toe Jam and Earl can be bought off the Virtual Console for less than the cost of a Starbucks run. Another plus is that it can be played using just the Wiimote, so you won't have to buy a Classic or Gamecube controller.

Super Mario Galaxy

With great visuals, fantastic music, and a touch of humour, Super Mario Galaxy is a great game to play by yourself. Add in a second player (who functions sort of like a wingman), and the game is even more fun. The second player (who uses only a Wiimote, no nunchuck required) has three responsibilities: collecting stars, shooting stars at enemies/objects, and holding enemies.

While collecting and shooting stars at enemies and objects isn't TOO big of a deal, the ability to hold enemies can be a true life saver. By keeping the Wiimote pointed at an enemy and holding the A button, your wingman can literally hold the enemy in place! This proves most useful when trying to get Bullet Bills to follow you and destroy glass domes. Be careful though; if you press A while the cursor is over Mario, you will make him jump! I hold no responsabilities for obsceneties yelled when your wingman does this for the umpteenth time "because they can".

Bubble Bobble

Ah, Bubble Bobble. A super-simple game to play (that, like Toe Jam and Earl, is also available on the Virtual Console) that gets crazy hard as you start getting into level 50 and 60. By working with each other, you can attempt to get all the enemies on the screen in bubbles at the same time, herd them all together, and pop them all at once for maximum points! The soundtrack is a very short looping 8-bit ditty that won't get out of your head long after you turn the game off...which is not a bad thing in this case.

Diablo II

An instant classic upon its release, Diablo II still stands as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) hack 'n' slash RPG of all time. With a completely unique game world every time you play it (multiplayer, anyway) and very simplistic controls (while not the best way, the entire game can be played using only the mouse if desired) Diablo II is an excellent game to get into with your loved one. Considered gentle to many systems even when it was released, if you have bought a computer in the past five years you are almost guarunteed to be able to run this game with all the options turned up.

The endless supply of loot, combined with the endless horde of enemies make this one a game you will play long and you will play often. Just remember to play as different classes, and to not leave your less experienced companion behind; it sounds obvious, but it happens easier than you might think (trust me...I am reminded of this fact quite often.)

Keep in mind that you will need two computers hooked up to the same LAN to play this one (or, if you don't live together, you can always play over Battle.net or a direct link game). A suggestion: if you are going to buy and play Diablo II together, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE EXPANSION! Not before or since has an expansion to a game been as complete as Lord of Destruction...it turns a great game into a legendary game.

World of Warcraft

Were you really expecting anything else in the number one slot? With near infinite amounts of loot, gobs of area to explore, and countless quests, this one may occupy you for months or possibly even years. Getting into the game is easy, as you aquire skills slowly at first. The music is fantastic, the artwork phenominal, and the atmosphere is second to none.

One of the biggest problems with World of Warcraft is trying to find another reliable person that you can quest with all the time. Well, you and your partner in crime will LOVE playing this one together. Another game that is very gentle on your computer, it doesn't really take much hardware to get it running with video options maxed out.

If you are lucky enough to have a widescreen LCD monitor, this game takes full advantage of it. It does require that you each have your own computer and your own account...plus it costs $15 a month to play. But look at it this way: it's one less movie you get to see per month, and countless more hours you will spend playing video games together. For the Horde!
